8F Homeroom

 

Calendar:

Sunday, September 5         - Church and Sunday School

Monday, September 6         - Labor Day; no school

 

·         Bible Verse of the Week – “…my sheep hear my voice and follow me.” John 10:4

·         September Mission Project – Pregnancy Care Center - Please remind your child to bring chapel offering each week for our mission projects.  Offerings will be collected all week and taken to chapel each Monday.

·         Family Units - Students will meet in family units briefly this week and sit together in chapel.  Our eighth graders will set examples and be family unit helpers with our first graders. 

 

8 English

 

This Week in Class:  We’ll continuing review mechanics, grammar, and usage through our daily MUG shots.  We’ll also continue to review Chapters 6-12 in Shurley.  We’ll review patterns 1,2.  Our writing focus will be on writing a phase autobiography.  We’ll use process writing to write about a time in our life at ILS.

 

Grammar:

·         We’ll continue with MUG (Mechanics, Usage, Grammar) daily oral language this week. 

·         We’ll review Shurley pattern 1,2 and chapters 6-12.

 

Vocabulary:

·         Students should have a list of vocabulary words in their writer’s notebook.  We’ll continue exploring and learning the words.  Our goal is to begin to use some of them in our speaking and writing.

·         Character Building #1:  loyalty, responsibility, polite, personality, respect, mannerly, optimism, confidence, trustworthy, fortitude, honest, caring

·         Word Wall Words:  optimism, fortitude, cumbersome, portly, injustice

 

Writer’s Workshop:

·         We’ll use writing process in Writer’s Workshop to brainstorm, pre-write, draft, collaborate with peers/teacher, revise and edit a writing.

·         We also continue to write in our Writer’s Notebook this week.  Students should make at least one entry for each school day.  If a student misses class due to an appointment or absence, he will still need to complete an entry for the day.   Ideas for WN entries have been pasted on the inside cover of the WN. 

·         Time will be given in class to at least begin the projects.  Students should have their USB flash drive with them each day.

 

Writing Deadlines:

·         5 paragraph phase autobiography rough draft, second draft, final draft/rubric (Friday, September 17)*

7 English

7 Literature

 

This Week in Class:

 

Current Unit of Study:  Unit 1 in our Literature textbook

·         We’ll continue with Unit 1 in our textbook this week.  We’ll review the literary terms we’ve been using so far and continue to explore a narrative nonfiction piece.  We’ll also begin a drama.

·         This week’s stories in Unit 1 are “Exploring the Titanic” by Robert D. Ballard and “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” by Rod Serling..

·         Vocabulary to know from the stories: (“Titanic”) accommodations, adjoining, moderate, novelty, prophecy, feverishly, ghastly, indefinitely; and (“Monsters”) assent, antagonism, contorted, converging, defiant, incriminate, optimistic, revelation

 

Independent Reading:  DEAR novel

·         We’ve been reading our DEAR novels for 3+ weeks.  Students will need to finish the novels by Wednesday.

·         Students need to have the DEAR book with them in Literature class each day.

6 Literature

 

This Week in Class:

·         We’ll continue reading Al Capone Does My Shirts in class this week.  I will read to the class.  Students may AR test on the book when we complete it.  Students may also check out a short book, “My Brother Martin,” from which our last story was taken.  This is an AR book worth .5 points.

 

Current Unit of Study:  Unit 1 in our Literature textbook

·         We’ll continue Unit 1 in our textbook this week. 

·         Our next story in Unit 1 is “Passage of Freedom” by Ken Mochizuki.

·         Vocabulary to know from the story:  diplomat, clung, refugee, issue, superiors, embrace, appreciation, deed, resign, humanity

 

Independent Reading:  AR novel

·         Students will continue reading AR.   The novel must be a fourth grade reading level or above, and one that the student has never tested on.

·         Students need to have the AR book with them in Literature class each day.

·         By now students should be finishing at least their first AR book.
